Virginia Hovendon

Turning moments into art.

Virginia Hovendon

Ginny Hovendon lives and works in upstate New York where she has built a life teaching and creating art that she hopes inspires her students as well as her patrons. She received her BA from Wells College and her MS in Art Education from Syracuse University. Her medium of choice lately has been drawing in a variety of materials including pencil, pen and charcoal which she renders on a collaged canvas and linen surface but she is also well known for her oil painting and her ceramic sculptures. Reading about many contemporary artists it seems that everyone always graduates from drawing into other media and that certainly is the case with Hovendon’s work, but her love of drawing is deep and lasting and she always comes back to it even after going to other forms of art. There is a rawness to it that lends itself to the vulnerability in the people in her portraits. Add that to the unraveled rough edges that now permeate the surface and there is a depth to the newer work that one didn’t see in her earlier pieces. Her work has been exhibited throughout Northern New York, featured in numerous magazines including the American Artist Magazine and Strokes of Genius and can be seen in many collections in Northern New York. She is part of the Fibonacci Art Gallery located in Watertown, NY.
